Prospect Bank School

PROSPECT BANK SCHOOL
Prospect Bank School was opened in 1975. It amalgamated the two primary departments of the former Clarebank School and Balfour Place School. Pilrig Park School amalgamated the secondary departments. The Prospect Bank/Pilrig Park arrangement is the only example of primary/secondary transfer for pupils with special educational needs within Edinburgh. The age range is 5 - 12 years.
The school caters for pupils with moderate/severe learning difficulties; speech and language difficulties; attendant motor difficulties; attendant social/emotional difficulties.
The maximum roll of the school is 60 pupils. If full, there would be six groups of 10. Because of the complex needs of some pupils, it is not always possible to maintain groups of 10 at every stage. The role is most often between 50 and 60.
Staffing at present consists of Head Teacher, Depute Head Teacher, 1 Principal Teacher, 6 Class Teachers, 6 Nursery Nurses, 5 Learning Assistants, 1 School Administrator (25 hrs per week), 1 part time Business Manager, 1 Music Specialist (1 day per week), 1 P.E. Specialist (1 1/2 days per week), 1 Art Specialist (1 1/2 days per week) 1 Technology Specialist (1 day a week ) and 1 Service Support Officer. Meals are cooked on the premises and this service is provided by: 1 Cook Supervisor and 1 Cook Assistant. The Authority does provide additional support for specific pupils.
The curriculum followed reflects the mainstream model covering the same areas. National and regional initiatives/guidelines form the framework for development. The focus within this framework is on the needs and progress of the individual pupil. Each pupil has an I.E.P.
Resources are maintained and adapted to meet the needs of the individual pupils. At Prospect Bank we provide access for all pupils to achieve excellence within a broad curriculum, and in collaboration with parents and staff, value their achievements in an environment which suits them best. School aims have been agreed with all staff and parents.
As the school caters for children with additional support needs, admission to the school follows assessment by the specialist advisers in the Children and Families department, in consultation with parents, and placement is considered by the appropriate professional assessment group. Parents are welcome to visit the school by arrangement with the Head Teacher (Tel No. 0131 553 2239).
There are at present 56 pupils. The school hours for pupils are from 9.05 a.m. - 3.10 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 9.05 a.m. - 1.00 p.m. Friday during the school session.
